Moving from the Old Editor
Apps that used the old editor kept English and Irish together in one resources.json file, and published by committing that file to the repo. Moving one over follows the same Checklist, with a few extra steps. The order matters.
1. Sync while the old file still has its Irish
The editor already has the Irish copied from the old editor. Before changing anything in the app:
- Make sure the project's settings point at the app's current
resources.json. - Sync each watched branch.
- Run Check old Irish on each branch (in the branch's ⋯ menu).
Check old Irish finds Irish that looks finished but was written for older English. The old editor only kept the latest English beside each Irish string, so when a developer reworded the English and nobody updated the Irish, the old Irish looked done. The check reads the file's history in the repo, lists every such string with the English it was written for, and Mark for review puts them back in the translators' To do list as English changed.
Do this before splitting the file. A sync only takes Irish from a file that still has it.
2. Split the file
Replace resources.json with an English-only file. Nothing is lost: the Irish is in the editor, and the repo's history keeps the old file.
While some branches still have the old file and others have the new one, set the project's English file to both, new one first, for example locales/en.json, locales/resources.json. Once every watched branch has the new file, list just that one.
3. Switch off the old publishing
- Delete the old
update_translationsworkflow from the app. Delete it on the default branch too: the old editor's "Update in Production" runs from there, and would otherwise keep overwriting the repo's translation file. - Stop using the app's page in the old editor. Its buttons don't include anything saved in the new editor.
4. Finish the setup
Complete the rest of the Checklist: build the Irish in, connect the live preview, and make the deploy runnable for Publish.
