Overview
The Translations Editor at translations.abair.ie is where the Irish for ABAIR's apps is written. Developers write the English in their code and push. Translators get the new strings in an inbox, translate them while watching the real app beside them, and publish.
Nobody edits Irish in a repo, copies JSON files around, or needs a GitHub token to get translations into an app.
One owner for each language
The editor rests on one rule: each language has a single home.
- English belongs to the code. Developers add and change it in the app's English file, like any other code.
- Irish belongs to the editor. It is never kept in the repo, so it never conflicts with branches, merges or pull requests.
Developers and translators no longer need to wait for each other. A developer can change English at any time. The editor notices, and the translator sees exactly what changed.
Who does what
| Role | What they do | Where to read |
|---|---|---|
| Developer | Adds English to the app's English file and pushes. Nothing else. | Adding Text |
| Translator | Works through the inbox, translates with the live preview, and publishes. | The Inbox |
| Admin | Registers projects, checks they are set up, and runs a project's first sync. | Administration |
Anyone with translations access on their ABAIR account can translate. Admins are a separate, smaller list kept in the editor.
What translators get
- An inbox of what changed recently, grouped by project, so they know what to work on next.
- A workspace that opens on what is left to do, with keyboard shortcuts, suggestions from Irish already written, and checks for missing placeholders.
- A live preview of the real app beside the list. It shows their Irish on the page as they type, and they can click any text in the app to jump to its string.
- History of every save, so nothing is ever lost and any earlier version can be brought back.
- Clear signals when English changes: the old Irish is kept, and the translator sees the change word by word.
