Why TrueNAS?
Open Source
TrueNAS is a popular open-sourced solution used by many organisations. It benefits from a large, active community and proven real-world usage. This implies trustworthiness, continuous improvements, and long-term support.
ZFS
TrueNAS which also provides ZFS. ZFS includes end-to-end checksumming, automatic error correction, snapshots, and efficient data compression. This ensures high reliability, prevents silent data corruption (bit rot), and allows powerful storage management, making it ideal for both small and enterprise environments.
TrueNAS Admin Access
If you are a new admin looking to access the TrueNAS console you must request an existing Admin to add you as an admin user.
You can SSH into the TrueNAS server the same way you can SSH into any other server in the Server List. Keep in mind that most server use Debian 12 Bookworm as the operating system, whereas the TrueNAS server is slightly different. Here is a list of guides for using TrueNAS.
Security Plans (5th August 2025)
The TrueNAS console is currently hidden as exposing it publicly compromises the security of our files.
In the near future, the TrueNAS client should accessible from the local network of the Hetzner server using a VPN. Some attempts were made in accessing it using the WireGuard VPN but more configuration is required.
Temporary solution to access the UI admin panel.
- SSH to the Webserver VM as a sudo user.
- Run the following commands to create a symbolic link to expose the truenas on
truenas.abair.ie. This exposes the admin console publicly and should be avoided.
sudo ln -s /etc/nginx/sites-available/truenas.abair.ie /etc/nginx/sites-enabled/
sudo nginx -t
sudo systemctl reload nginx
- After making necessary changes ensure to remove the nginx port forwarding and hide the console from public view.
sudo rm /etc/nginx/sites-enabled/truenas.abair.ie
sudo nginx -t
sudo systemctl reload nginx
